Sleep apnea

What is sleep apnea?

There are three main types of sleep apnea, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when there is a blockage in your upper airway during sleep, causing shallow breaths or pauses in your breathing. These pauses are called “apneas” and they prevent air from getting to your lungs, which reduces the oxygen to your body. It’s this lack of oxygen that causes many of the symptoms of sleep apnea, including morning headaches and high blood pressure.

Weight & Sleep Apnea

So why is there such a significant link?

Poor sleep disrupts metabolism

When you’re fatigued, your lifestyle becomes less active and you’ll expend fewer daily calories.

Low daytime energy = less active

Even one night of poor sleep can leave you feeling unmotivated during the day. So imagine the impact that months—or even years—of restless sleep can have on energy levels.

Hormonal changes

Poor sleep can decrease your leptin output, the hormone responsible for sending “your-stomach-is-full” signals to your brain.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

One of the most commonly known symptoms of sleep apnea is snoring, but there are others. If you have any of the following symptoms, it could be sleep apnea.

Health Risks

What are the health risks?
