Some people always feel like they wake up in the middle of a dream. Why does this happen? To understand sleep and dreaming, it is important to consider the four sleep stages our body goes through during the night, in addition to Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, where dreaming occurs.
For a person with a normal sleep cycle, the body cycles through these stages five to six times per night. As the night goes on, the four sleep stages get shorter and the REM stages get longer. Therefore, odds are that when your alarm clock goes off you'll wake up from a REM cycle, where dreaming occurs. This explains many people feeling like they always wake up in the middle of a dream!
