Honouring the Legacy of Dr. John E. Remmers

July 11, 2025

With deep respect and sadness, Careica Health remembers the life and legacy of Dr. John E. Remmers, MD—a true pioneer in sleep medicine, a brilliant inventor, and a close collaborator in our shared commitment to improving the lives of people living with obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Remmers was more than a global icon in sleep research. He was a good friend of Careica Health and a key figure in shaping the technologies that continue to drive our care forward. The primary sleep disorder we treat, obstructive sleep apnea, was first observed and studied by Dr. Remmers 40 years ago.  Among his many other groundbreaking contributions, we are proud to have built elements of our sleep program around the technology he helped bring to life: the Remmers Sleep Recorder, a foundational home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) tool, and Auto-CPAP machines, which automatically adjust airway pressure to a patient’s needs throughout the night. Together, these innovations allowed both the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea to move out of the sleep lab and into the home, transforming treatment accessibility and patient care.

Dr. Remmers’ legacy extends well beyond the sleep apnea devices he helped create. He transformed the field of sleep medicine through a rare combination of scientific ingenuity and deep compassion. He understood the science deeply but never lost sight of the patient. His innovations didn’t just advance medicine, they improved lives.

At Careica, we continue to feel the impact of Dr. Remmers’ work every day. His spirit lives on in every patient we serve with the tools he imagined and helped create.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire sleep medicine community.
